Why can't it be October all year long?

Lake Anna Bass Fishing - October
With the exception of late March / early April, October is my favorite time of year to be on the water.  The boat traffic and jet ski's are gone, a lot of the fishing pressure is deer hunting, and the water has cooled making the fish extremely active.  There is a distinct difference in the attitude of these fish compared to a month ago and you will understand what I'm talking about the second you set the hook.  With the right weather conditions there is a tremendous topwater bite to be had early in the morning.  With cloud cover and a little spitting rain this can last well into the day.  Just like in the spring, this time of year you can put up big numbers of fish.  Half day or full day, whatever you have time for.  This month will provide some great opportunities to catch a pile of fish and enjoy some gorgeous fall weather.  Call Taylor @ 540.842.9155 to book your trip today!

Cool Mornings and Hot Action

Lake Anna Striper / Bass Fishing - September
Water temps are dropping into the mid to low 70's and the fish are on the move.  Transitioning into a fall pattern, fish are becoming very aggressive and often schooling on concentrations of bait fish.  With the right conditions this can add up to a tremendous day on the water using light tackle.  Low light conditions are best (early morning and late afternoon/evening) for finding topwater action.  Half day trips are an excellent way to take advantage of this or book a full day and fill the livewell with crappie through the middle of the day.  Call Taylor at 540.842.9155 to book your trip today!

Lake Anna Striper Fishing

Lake Anna Striper Fishing - July 2012
These Michiganders came looking for lunkers.  First fish to the boat (above) was almost 13 pounds!  They didn't let up, putting several jumbo stripers in the net before night fall.  All fish were released and everyone onboard, including myself, had a great time.  If you would like more information on booking an evening striper trip, or fishing in general on Lake Anna, e-mail Taylor@cvofishing.com and I will respond as soon as possible or give me a call at 540.842.9155.

Spotsylvania Bass Anglers Beware!

Potomac River Bass Fishing - July
With the second Spotsylvania Bass Anglers tournament on the Potomac River fast approaching, Johnboy and Mean Gene show no signs of letting up as they make a run at the top of the leader board.  Their win on the Rappahannock puts them within reach of first place now more than half way through the season.  In the midst of a terrible heat wave bass have become lethargic.  Slow down and stay on point.  Until conditions improve you will need to make every bite count as fish in the 4-5 pound class become increasingly difficult to find.

Dynamite Net Job - What Not To Do

See if you can spot all of the things you shouldn't do while trying to land a Striped Bass on relatively light tackle. 1st - Don't try to swoop a green fish that is coming straight at you as he will get a great view of the net. 2nd - Don't drop the fish out of the net once you have him in it.  3rd - Don't allow a fish to get near the outboard / try to land the fish on the side of the boat rather than behind.  A couple of things were done correctly.  1st - nobody got hurt.  2nd - The fish did eventually end up in the boat.  3rd - Everyone had a blast.  Fishing has really been good this week.  Half day trips are a great way to do a little fishing while we work through the hottest weeks of summer.  Full day trips can be broken into a morning and evening session.  E-mail Taylor@cvofishing.com to book your trip today.

Lake Anna Striper Fishing

Lake Anna Striper Fishing in June
Spitting rain in the morning followed by downpours in the afternoon couldn't spoil the mood onboard today.  Steady action for most of the day with just a few quiet stretches.  Caught a bunch of fish and kept these three beauties for the grill.  Found a healthy school of fish down lake in 35' of water that provided tight lines and good entertainment.  Live bait fishing continues to be very productive however the evening trolling is beginning to heat up.  Week days are especially good with little boat traffic to contend with.

Snakes: It's What For Dinner

Aquia Creek Snakehead Fishing in May
Carrying out your environmental responsibilities as an angler never tasted so good.  These fish appear offensive but have firm white meat fillets with mild flavor making them arguably the finest eating fish in fresh water.  Snakeheads fight hard, bite aggressively, and often jump several times on their way to the boat. A thick slime coat and a mouth full of teeth can pose a challenge while handling the fish but a couple of cotton rags and Boga Grip will make short work.  Dark colored soft plastic baits will trigger a strike as well as topwater plastic frogs.  Look for snakeheads in the same places you find largemouth.  In areas of extremely thick vegetation fish the edge of the grass during the last third of a falling tide.  Medium to heavy bass tackle with braided line and no drag is a good recipe for a great time.

Lake Anna Bluegill Spawn

Conditions:
70 degrees
Mild

Gear:
XPS Pro Qualifier Rods & Reels
6 lb Seaguar Fourocarbon
1/16 ounce grubs

This is my youngest son Collin. He and my 9 year old Evan are fanatic about fishing. The only problem is that I can't take them every day... So I try to make sure that the days I can take them, will be enjoyable weather etc. This trip worked out perfectly... Massive Bluegill have moved up to spawn. There are areas with 30-40 large bluegill within a 10 foot radius. These are hard fighting agressive fish that present a perfect fishing opportunity for young kids...

Now is the time to "get on" some of these huge Lake Anna bluegill.

Crappie Fishing in May

Conditions:
Water Temp 68
10 mph winds

Gear:
Live minnows
Xps Pro Qualifier rods and reels
6 lb Seaguar flourocarbom
Adjustable slip bobbers

Valerie and Steve are regular clients of mine... I think Valerie would fish from sun up to sun down if she could... The day started out pretty slow fo us, but by mid day we were catching every few minutes... The better bites were coming in about 15 feet of water over brushpiles with the bait sitting at about 10 feet. Valerie and Steve are always a joy to fish with, i look forward to our next outing.

Tons Of Fun - Live Bait Fishing

Lake Anna Live Bait Fishing - May
Today was an absolute blast!  Spent the morning drifting live bait and caught several stripers along with this nine pound catfish.  The striper bite died off mid morning and the lake really got busy.  We changed tackle and went on the crappie.  Managed to boat some slab crappie but the real story was all the bonus fish.  I have never seen so many species of fish caught on Lake Anna in one day.  Largemouth, stripers, catfish, crappie, yellow perch, white perch (and I mean bigguns), warmouth, and bluegills.  Tons of fun.

Lake Anna Fishing - Back To Normal?

Lake Anna Bass Fishing April
Lake Anna Bass Fishing April
This year has been unusual to say the least.  A very mild winter resulted in relatively warm lake water, no significant shad kill, and the stripers staying up in the rivers with huge bait plugs all winter and into the spring.  Then it gets super warm, super early, and a tremendous number of Rosie O'donnell bass come up shallow in MARCH and spawn (this was amazing, I can't remember seeing this many Largemouth over 6 pounds in Lake Anna / very encouraging).  The five fish Lake Anna tournament record was shattered March 23 during the Fishers of Men tournament by a sack weighing in at almost 28 pounds.  This is a tremendous accomplishment and goes to show that this lake is healthy and so is its population of lunker bass.

For the past three and half weeks we have had a million fronts push through, 7 day stretches of sustained wind over 15 mph, and falling water temps.  Now the barometer and the thermometer seem to have stabilized and my notes on Lake Anna are beginning to resemble years past.  Water temperatures are rising again and bass are plentiful on secondary points /

near the spawning pockets just begging to eat a carolina rig.  Good numbers of crappie are being caught in key grass beds and shallow brush on soft plastics and minnows.  The big schools of stripers are still in the rivers  following large schools of bait.  Live bait is the way to go for now but the trolling bite shouldn't be too far away.  As water temps continue to climb next month, watch for the stripers to start spilling into mid-lake hot spots.  In my opinion if you want to catch stripers tomorrow, early is the way to go.  Late afternoon seems to be the ticket for bass and crappie right now.  Waves of spawning largemouth will continue to show up (I don't think it will be as gratuitous as we saw in March).  Look for a dynamite topwater bite early in the morning over the coming weeks.  It is still fishing and what worked today might not tomorrow, especially during this time of year when the fish are known to be in motion constantly.  Nothing trumps time on the water so dust off that tackle box and let's get to it!

Wind Blown Potomac

Potomac River - Pre Spawn / Spawn Conditions
The wind was really cranking by this afternoon and it became a challenge to not only find decent water but stay in one place using the trolling motor.  During the last part of the tide some cloud cover moved in and the bite improved.  Water temperature has dropped a little in the past week but the fish haven't gone far / just pulled out a little.  This 6 pound 3 oz pig looked like she was ready to pop any second (note tail / gut).  With cooler temperatures in the forecast this week you will need to slow down your presentation throughout the day and take full advantage during periods of feeding activity.

Moving On Up - Bass Getting Shallow in Prep For Spawn

Lake Anna Pre-Spawn / Spawn Conditions
These fish can't wait to get it on.  Find the clean, protected spawning pockets and burn up that trolling motor.  Cold fronts will slow fish down tremendously and either bury them in cover or pull them back.  To catch bass during the spawn does not require site fishing.  Crankbaits, swim baits, shakey heads, and flukes will catch these fish.  Stay keyed in on heavy concentrations of baitfish.  The bass will have to feed heavily in preparation for the spawn and during recovery.  Top water baits early in the morning and late in the evening are never a bad call this time of year.  Remember that all fish don't spawn at the same time.  If something stops working for you, go back and check it in a week or two.

Lake Anna Striper Fishing

Striper Fishing Lake Anna in March
The Striper bite is pretty solid right now and the favorable water quality and temperatures we are experiencing has supercharged these fish.  You will notice a distinct difference as soon as you set the hook.....they're mad, hungry, and ready to pull.  All of the river systems seem to be holding pretty good numbers of fish.  Try drifting live bait along the channel edge and move shallow during periods of peek activity.  As always key in on those areas where the shad are holding.  If live bait isn't your deal try casting 3"-6" swimbaits around points and humps near the  river channel.  It's important not to set the hook to aggressively as these fish will often just get the tail or miss the bait completely several time before choking it.  Allow the rod to load up before getting tight and setting the hook.  Make sure that your rod has enough backbone to make a long cast and handle larger fish while still have enough taper as to not pull the bait out of their mouth.  This Swimbait presentation will be most effective during low light conditions.  Stripers will eat the Alabama Rig.

Pre Spawn Is In The Air

Lake Anna Pre-Spawn Bass Fishing
Though winter patterns are still effective at times, bass are on the move.  Most pre-spawn techniques are proving effective.  Though fish will feed during the day, get on the water early for more aggressive and fast paced action.  Cloud cover and a little wind will extend this morning feed.  Find the threadfin shad and you will find largemouth bass trying to pack on some weight in preparation for spawn.  Pay attention to water temperature and clarity.  Clear is better than muddy, warmer is better than colder.

Alabama-Slama

Anyone that tells you wind is your friend was not fishing on Lake Anna today after 10 am.  Found fish on wind blown points but the entire lake was windblown.  Stuck it out until noon and then ran for the marina.

Gearing up for Spring Bass Fishing

Early March Bass Fishing on Lake Anna
It proved to be another great day on Lake Anna... We had to work for it, and pay attention to the changes in the weather, but we were able to put together a couple of really nice limits. Some were caught on carolina rigs, some on small crankbaits and swimbaits. Dennis and Walter are learning new techniques for this spring and looking to upgrade from spinning rods to baitcasters... So far, so good. See you again in a few weeks fellas!

Dick Steele Returns

Dick Steele returns to Lake Anna for the first trip of 2012 and is greeted by a heard of angry largemouth.  After a very costly mistake two years ago in March involving a huge bass and a carolina rig (which will never be forgotten) it was pay back time.  When the weather gets bad, the bass get mad.

Febuary Fishing on Lake Anna

Doug Payne with a nice Lake Anna Largemouth
We got out for a couple hours this evening to see if we could catch a few bass. It was pretty slow going, but that's just the way it goes in February. We checked on a couple of areas that are packed full of Threadfin Shad... There are literally acres of shad crammed into some of the creeks and pockets  off of the main lake. Unfortunatley the fish are hard to catch in these areas because of the abundant forage... They just don't have to work very hard for food right now. The water temperature was in the upper 40's in most of the areas that we were fishing. The mild winter is offering some pretty pleasant days on the water. If you are interested in getting out for a couple hours give me a call at 540-287-3591. You can see more pictures and details about the guide service at http://www.cvofishing.com/p/charlie-bowles.html

We went out for a couple of hours this afternoon to wind down... This is the first time Chris has been out this year. He stuck with the trusty ole "Shakey Head". Not a bad way to start out 2012.

Slow Rollin for Winter Bass

Nice 4 pounder cought on a swimbait
Slow Rollin
A slow and steady retrieve was the key today...
Water Temps were about 45 degrees, bright sun, litte bit of wind...

It was all about main lke points with bait nearby. Most of the bites came on a 4 inch xps shad body on a 3/8 ounce jig head. Throw it out, let it sink all the way to the bottom, reel it in very slow - keeping regular contact with the bottom. Wait for your rod to "load-up" and it was game on!

Come on Spring!
